Taylor Swift’s wedding ceremony in July with Travis Kelce inside Madison Square Garden — “the world’s most famous arena” — reaffirmed her reign as today’s top music star.

Dolly Parton’s death in August reminded all of us she ranked as probably the most universally beloved music icon — a status already evident in polling months earlier.

But the biggest and unlikeliest music success story of 2026 belongs to a deeply weird duo no record label executive would’ve dared to imagine steamrolling critics, streaming charts and concert halls so effortlessly.

If you’re a rabid music fan like me, you’ve probably already heard these guys. Their repertoire is dominated by jagged instrumentals. They speak in their own made-up language of bleeps, grunts and gurgles. They claim to be 333-year-old time travelers. And they’ve remained anonymous by disguising themselves in polka-dotted bodysuits and papier-mache masks accented with outrageous noses worthy of Pinocchio.

If you’re newcomers to this act, you’re in for a rare treat.

Welcome to the bizarre world of Angine de Poitrine.

Fans of tamer tunes might hear one song and understand why their name is French for an angina, or chest pain. (And here’s how to pronounce the name.)

The guitarist, Khn, plays a custom double-necked guitar/bass combo. The extra frets on his instrument, paired with foot pedals that let him record and loop sections of his riffs live in concert, bring this “microtonal math rock” to life. (Microtonal refers to notes that fall in the cracks of the 12-note scale familiar to Western ears. And math rock is a music-nerd term for a subgenre prioritizing complex rhythms and chord changes over catchy melodies.)

The drummer, Klek, thumps away on a relatively small kit with a single bass-drum pedal — nothing like the monster drum sets favored by the late Neil Peart or his replacement, Anika Nilles, in classic-rock arena act Rush.

Speaking of Rush, I probably should mention that Angine de Poitrine is also Canadian, hailing from the midsize city of Saguenay, Quebec.

That means no matter what happens with this summer’s sad escalation of our U.S.-Canada trade war, our maple syrup-guzzling neighbors to the the north have already won the culture war. About 400,000 people cross between the two countries daily, but Khn and Klek tip the scales in Canada’s favor.

They’re even making their U.S. TV debut Sept. 14 on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.” Maybe it’s the modern puppet-show-on-acid equivalent of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan in 1964?

1833: The U.S. opened its first consulate in what’s now Canada the same year Frederic Chopin began publishing his “Etudes” in Paris.
1867: Canada was founded the same year S.H.M. Byers wrote “The Song of Iowa” to the tune of “O Tannenbaum.” It became Iowa’s state song in 1911.
1958: Canada and the U.S. co-founded NORAD the same year Buddy Holly released his debut album. The following year, Holly died in an Iowa plane crash.
2026: In the words of Rolling Stone, “Angine de Poitrine conquered the internet. Now they’re coming for America.”

It all began (of course) with a YouTube video

Angine de Poitrine established its U.S. beachhead in the Pacific Northwest in February, when Seattle indie rock station KEXP posted a YouTube video that went viral and is now closing in on 20 million views:

Since then, the band has built buzz and amassed fans on tour.

In June, the Montreal International Jazz Festival had to close access to the band’s free outdoor show because tens of thousands of fans flooded the streets to hear its native sons perform. The previous year, Khn and Klek drew a crowd of only 2,000.

Alexander Abnos, who covered the band’s New York debut earlier this week for the Guardian, wrote that Angine de Poitrine has created “an intoxicating mystery.”

“Listeners are left free to wonder what this mysterious duo are playing, why it sticks in the mind like a pop song despite its timings and tunings, and how the hell they are physically able to play it with all that stuff on them,” he added.

A recent Guitar World interview with Khn (via email, not alien language) revealed that his guitar teacher was a “huge Frank Zappa fan,” which makes sense. The guitarist also mused on the core absurdity of the act, which he and Klek embrace:

“When you have this excellent idea of playing these (guitar) lines in the dark with lights flashing in your face, no peripheral vision, dollar store acrylic paint all over your fingers, while having a heat stroke just for kicks, sure, it’s very hard. We always struggle and laugh at how ridiculous it all is. But it’s a band. It’s an act to make people smile, to make people laugh, possibly while dancing. It wouldn’t make much sense to do that if show business was strictly about music as [just sound].”

Musically, Angine de Poitrine has plenty of forebears, including Zappa and King Crimson.

Visually, their media-savvy costumes and anonymity conjure comparisons both French (Daft Punk) and Iowan (Slipknot).

So we’re left with a music sensation whose identities, language and melodies are nigh incomprehensible.

The more I think about it, the more Angine de Poitrine sounds like the perfect soundtrack to the dizzying swirl of 2026. We’re teetering on the frightening cusp of artificial general intelligence while late-stage MAGA flails ahead of the midterms.

Rock on (or continue doing whatever it is you do), Khn and Klek. We’re rooting for you, even if we can’t sing along.
